About Us
9Q Math was started in 2017-2018 by long time math educator Ellen Clay to support students, teachers, and families in seeing how natural math activity is to our every day lives.
Beginning with measuring the nine quantities of ordinary objects in our everyday lives and the natural activities of combining and comparing those measures, we can build the entire elementary mathematics curriculum. Noticing the relationships that naturally arise when measuring these ordinary objects of our everyday lives, we can build the entire middle school curriculum. After a few years of measuring, combining and comparing measures, and noticing relationships between measures and the characteristics of those relationships we can build the secondary school curriculum.
We are here to get you started in making sense of the math. Once the fun has begun you can learn to represent your mathematical activity in the mathematically powerful representations that allow you to make sense of the mathematics of the school curriculum. After all, every problem in every textbook and on every assessment is simply someone's representation of their counting and measuring activities.
Our Founder
Ellen Clay has been teaching math to students, teachers, and administrators, for over 30 years. With a deep understanding of the field of math and experience with students grades K - 16 and beyond, she has learned to make the mathematics of the K-12 curriculum literally come alive for all.
Once teachers and their students begin to engage in counting and measuring activity, she has the ability to represent the activity in mathematically powerful ways that begin to look just like a textbook.
She invites you to take part in the conversation with her. Let's show the world that we can count and measure our way through the K - 12 math curriculum.
